In the sport of cricket, the Purple Cap is an award given to the leading wicket-taker of the Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament. It is similar to the “Orange Cap,” which is awarded to the batsman who scores the most runs in the tournament.
The Purple Cap was introduced in the IPL’s second season in 2009. It is a literal purple-colored cap that is awarded to the player with the highest number of wickets at the end of the tournament. If two or more players have the same number of wickets, the Purple Cap is awarded to the player with a better economy rate.
The Purple Cap is passed on from one player to another throughout the tournament as players take wickets. The current holder of the Purple Cap wears it during the matches until he is overtaken by another player.
The Purple Cap has become a prestigious award in the IPL, and it is often a source of motivation for bowlers to perform at their best. Several legendary bowlers, such as Lasith Malinga, Dwayne Bravo, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, have won the Purple Cap multiple times.
