Ind vs Aus 3rd ODI: Suryakumar Yadav has made an unwanted record in ODI cricket as he became the first batter in the game’s history to be dismissed for a first-ball duck in every match of an ODI series. He was bowled by left-arm spinner Ashton Agar in the third ODI in Chennai, marking his third successive golden duck in the ongoing series against Australia.
Suryakumar, who is ranked as the world’s No. 1 T20I batter, has been struggling to perform in the 50-over format. He was dismissed for a first-ball duck in both the Mumbai and Visakhapatnam ODIs to Mitchell Starc, who trapped him LBW with his inswinging deliveries.
In the series decider, Suryakumar was out bowled by Agar when India was chasing a target of 270. His dismissal came at a crucial phase of the match when Virat Kohli was also dismissed in the previous delivery by Agar.
Although several prominent cricketers, including Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Anil Kumble, have bagged three successive ducks in ODI cricket, Suryakumar’s record of being dismissed for a first-ball duck in every match of an ODI series is unique.

Head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma have backed Suryakumar after his first two golden ducks in the series, saying that he would get an extended run in ODIs. Suryakumar was picked in the XI as a replacement for injured Shreyas Iyer and was demoted to No. 7 after his poor performance in the series.
Suryakumar’s struggle with the bat has been a cause for concern for the Indian team, especially since he has been in good form in T20Is. His inability to get going in ODIs has put pressure on India’s middle order and has affected the team’s chances of posting competitive scores.
However, Suryakumar’s struggles are not unique in cricket, and many great players have gone through similar rough patches. The likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, and Kumar Sangakkara have all had prolonged lean patches in their careers, but they bounced back with even greater success.

Despite his struggles, Suryakumar remains a talented player with the potential to significantly impact the Indian team. His performances in domestic cricket and T20Is suggest that he has the skills and temperament to succeed in international cricket. It is only a matter of time before he finds his feet in the ODI format.
