India’s sixth win in the World Cup, Defeating England by 100 Runs in Lucknow

India vs England World Cup 2023: In the 29th match of the ODI World Cup 2023, India triumphed over the defending champions, England, with a resounding 100-run victory. England’s captain, Jos Buttler, won the toss and opted to bowl first at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. India batted first and scored 229 runs for nine wickets in their allotted 50 overs. In response, England faced a tough time, managing only 129 runs in 34.5 overs. This win marked India’s sixth consecutive victory in the tournament, positioning them on the brink of reaching the semi-finals. In contrast, England experienced their fifth defeat in six matches and secured only two points.

The Indian bowlers played a crucial role in this impressive win. Jasprit Bumrah sealed England’s fate by clean bowling Mark Wood on the fifth ball of the 35th over. Wood faced just one delivery and didn’t score any runs. David Willey remained unbeaten after contributing 16 runs. India clinched the match with Wood’s dismissal, emerging victorious by a margin of 100 runs. This win elevated India to 12 points from six matches, bringing them closer to a semi-final berth. On the other hand, England found themselves in a challenging situation with just two points after suffering their fifth defeat in six matches.

This victory was particularly significant as it marked India’s first World Cup win over England in two decades. Their previous victory against England in the World Cup was in 2003. Subsequently, in 2011, the match between the two teams ended in a tie, and in 2019, Team India faced defeat.

England’s captain, Jos Buttler, decided to bowl first when they won the toss at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. India’s batting performance led to a total of 229 runs for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted 50 overs. In response, India’s bowlers delivered a brilliant performance, ensuring that England’s batsmen found it tough to score. Mohammed Shami, who had previously taken five wickets against New Zealand, continued his impressive form by claiming four wickets in this match. The experienced Jasprit Bumrah took three wickets, while Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja each secured two and one wicket, respectively.

England’s batsmen struggled to put up a fight, with three of them failing to score any runs in their innings. Despite having experienced players like Joe Root and Ben Stokes, Mark Wood was dismissed without opening his account. Liam Livingstone was the highest scorer for England, contributing 27 runs. David Malan scored 16, David Willey remained unbeaten with 16 runs, Moeen Ali made 15, Jonny Bairstow added 14, Adil Rashid scored 13, and both Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes managed to score 10 runs.

Mohammed Shami continued to be a menace to England’s batting lineup as he claimed his fourth wicket of the match by bowling out Adil Rashid. Rashid was dismissed on the sixth ball of the 34th over, scoring 13 runs from 20 balls. This exceptional performance by the Indian bowlers was a key factor in India’s victory over England.
